Comments: | ...Just think about this for a minute... The photo is marked 1909???.... The site is the Reading Fairgrounds and if you look close you can see that it does say "Reading Fairgrounds" on top of the covered grandstands. (I'd love to see a picture of whatever they were riding in when they took this photo!) I'm also told that car racing did not start until years after this photo was taken... Think of the history that was created here... |

08.20.09 | George Gwynn | It's possible, but doing some research on the aircraft of
1909 I discovered that they might have been ill suited for aerial
photography. If indeed this photo was taken from the air in 1909, it's clear that daredevils visited the Fairgrounds in other ways than juston the racetrack. George Gwynn Frederick, MD |
08.20.09 | 3Wide | My guess is that its from more like the 30's or 40's, but I don't have any direct knowledge of the area of the speedway. Perhaps there are a few out there that can identify either the presence of certain buildings or roads, (or their absence) and correlate them to a particular year. |
06.01.10 | Bill Kat | Looking at the photo, I can see the school building which is still there. If you check the cornerstone of that building, you might get some idea of when the photo was snapped. |
07.08.10 | Bill Kat | I just had one of Berks County's local historians look at the photo. He believe that it couldn't be from 1909 because the Fairgrounds did not move to that location until 1915. |
