from Russ: This is a magnificent Bob Farlee photo looking into Flemington
Fairgrounds Speedway first turn in 1958. The inside guard rail is what separated the
"men from the boys" so to speak. If you caught the "knack" of running
with it there, you were O.K. It's easy to see why it was removed a few years later. The
surface of the track was smooth and hard during the program. You could hear tires
squealing as the went into the turns. The clay was dark as you can see. (True story:
A first timer sat next to me in the covered grandstand. As warm ups started he
turned to me and asked, "This is dirt isn't?" Sometimes it was close to being
like asphalt.) Note the trees outside the guard rail. Those Flemington Dreams continue. Thanks, Russ Dodge |

01/24/06 | 3-Wide | The photo is from 1958. If I expand the original photo, the orange car leading the pack is actually a sedan. In addition, if you look in the parking lot, you see an array of 1950's vehicles. |
08.28.09 | Roger McCloughan | The reason the clay was so dark is because Bill Kinnamon (Fair President and President of the Hunterdon County National Bank) was very diligent about using a lot of water and calcium and working both into the track on a regular basis. When you had to walk across the track it was like having glue on your shoes! |
