Salt Walther was a real piece of work! I remember seeing him on a late
night TV show after his wreck at Indy. They asked him about the burns. When talking about
his burned hand he said,"Did you ever see chicken on the grill when it got over
cooked and it turned black around the bone? That's how my fingers were. They just kept
clipping them down until they got to the good part." During the weekend at Trenton
pictured, Salt pulled into the pit for fuel. In the fueling process the pit crew member
holding the fuel over flow catch device ( a clear hose with a large funnel in the top end)
jerked it out slinging fuel on the engine and in the cockpit. A fire broke out which was
virtually invisible because of the fuel. I was there when Salt talked to the pit crew. I
thought he would be really up set after the Indy fire deal. He wasn't. His only discussion
about it was, "We need to be a little more careful next time." "Iron
Mike" Magill, of Haddonfield, New Jersey, ran in the Indy 500 in 1957,'58 and '59
driving for Salt's dad George Walther, in the #77 Dayton Steel Foundry Special. Thanks,
