07/04/03 Jeff McClung This was one of the best racing facilities ever, what a shame, so manny epic side by side races, and the fan facilities were unmatched.
01/02/04 Gary Lileck Yes, the main entrance to one of the finest speedways this area had to offer. Penn National Speedway. Remember how the lines at each ticket booth were back past the wall and into the parking lot? I can remember getting to the track at least two hours early just so we could get a good spot in line. Now look at it. What a shame.
03/06/04 Billy B Why was this track closed and why was it never re-opened by anyone? Is there any reason why it cannot re-open? Send responses to billyb@neetstour.net

03/07/04 3-Wide Just drove by the exit on the PA Turnpike coming back from Gettysburg today and saw the PennDot sign saying "Penn National Race Course" this exit....  Last I heard, their is nothing good going on out there regarding Penn National and Auto Racing.... Any and all news appreciated from those in the know...
06/27/04 Stacie Lynn Is there anyway I can get directions to Penn National Speedway?  I'm an amateur photographer and looking for places to photograph from my family's past.  My dad and his brothers used to go there all the time but my dad refused to give me directions because he said that the place was gone.   Is there anyway to get directions and take some pictures to jog his memory and hear more "old fart" stories about racing in the old days?
06/27/04 3-Wide I've never been there, but if you take the PA Turnpike out to Harrisburg, there are official PennDot Signs right on the highway that have "Penn National Race Coarse This Exit".  Like I said, I've never been there, but I always thought it must be right out there somewhere.  Hopefully one of us other "O.F.'s" can provided more specific info!

You know, now you got me thinking about adding a new section to the Vault called:  "O. F. Stories About Racing in the Old Days!"

05/15/05 Rick Hi everyone,
Yes Penn National is still standing, but used as storage.....the way I got the story was the noise from the cars scared the horses, so that was the biggest reason it was closed.
The easiest way to explain is from Rt.81 North of Harrisburg if memory serves me right its exit 78 for Rt.743, but instead of going South towards Hershey PA, go North about 1 1/2 miles to a "T" which is Rt. 443 turn right & go about 1/2 mile & the track is on your right. Just before you get to the T you can see the back of the grandstand on your right.
I used to work there for Jack Gunn taking calls for reserved seats Sundays and clean up on Monday. And even if it was raining, I was to NOT tell anyone it was because they didn't want to cancel till the last minute.........SO....I used to tell everyone "it was just a dry drizzle"....LOL! Anyone remember calling and getting that answer as to what the weather was?
I know a lot of drivers said IF the turns were banked to where the top of the wall is, it would've been a REALLY GREAT track, not that it wasn't a good track to race at, BUT........

On another subject, anyone have any info or pictures on Al Wertz, I know from checking the Reading Fairgrounds website that he raced there(I'm not sure if he raced anywhere else) but he won a couple of races at Reading, but I have no idea what his car number was. And I know he hung around Williams Grove/Selinsgrove/Hagerstown/Penn National Speedways till he died, because he loved racing.

He was like a father to me, Al got me my first job as a teen with Jack Gunn, but I don't remember anything other then he used to have the racecar sitting at the house when I was a young one. After Al past away I wanted to get a few pictures to remember him by, (but was unable to...)  So PLEASE contact me at FreeRider2@hotmail.com  if anyone has anything.
THANK YOU - Rick
10.08.10  Rick Clay what a shame, the place was FIRST class, will NEVER-NEVER EVER set foot inside the Casinos they built next to race track site.  Really miss the speedway!
