Comments: Flemington Sportsman campaigner Dave Spurlin has been busy recreating an exact replica of the car that he drove in the early 80's.  And when I say exact, I mean exact!  The chassis was prepared by Bob Fisher (as the original was), and Dave went out and found a 36 Dodge Coupe, a Fisher hood, and is seeing to it that everything, bend for bend is the same.  Dave's fabrication skills, combined with his desire to race reminds us of a time when the majority of cars on the track were there because of the efforts of the individuals who spent their weeknights in the garage building a car, and then every week repairing it, and trying to improve week after week.

We look forward to seeing this on the Vintage circuit in 2005.

02/06/05 Bob Hoffman Dave You have have built a great looking coupe. The race fans of today have no idea what kind of talent and skill it takes to build a car as beautiful
as this car is. Thanks for bringing back many found memories of my past
helping to build stock cars for various teams. Best of luck with this great car.
02/06/05 3-Wide For those who don't know Dave, he does it all by himself.  He worked with Bob Fisher to get the frame where it needed to be, but other than that he pretty much fabricates everything... and I do mean everything!
05/03/05 Neal Wilt I remember Dave's blue No. 42 Sportsman Coupes. If my memory is correct he flipped on two occassions in the second turn.
05/05/05 3-Wide I don't know if Dave ever flipped, but I think the car did flip after he sold it... Hey Dave.... fill us in...
05/07/05 Dave Spurlin Sorry Neal, I never flipped!

Almost everyone I knew did though!  I was high enough in the air to see over the 2nd turn wall once, another time I spun out in Turn 2 when a power steering hose blew and I couldn't correct it fast enough. After the yellow was out for what seemed like forever and I was waiting for the wrecker, a straggler came roaring out of the pits and trying to catch up to the field never saw the yellow and T-boned me. When I opened my eyes he was doing an end over end over the front end of my car. I had quite a view of that one! That totaled my car and probably his too.

The Fisher car was already started at that time so I just concentrated on building that. Once in the Fisher car we were "3Wide" on the outside down the front stretch when Bruce Driver way down on the inside set his car hard for the first turn and made contact with Don Taylor in the #51M which darted him over in front of me. I had a good run on everyone and caught his right rear wheel on my way by and wheelied off of it. Taylor and I both went head on hard into the first turn wall very close to each other with him doing a roll over. Maybe those were the incidents you remember. Thanks for commenting!

I saw Dave Spurlin's coupe last night at the stock car display that was set-up at the Warren Fair. This car is perfect in every way. It obviously took a lot of work to rebuild this machine, and the attention to detail shows. I just wanted to let Dave know that his hard work is much appreciated by those of us that love the classic dirt cars. I'd really like to see this car compete again, along with the other cars that were there (the B6 Falcon, Frankie's #2 Pinto, etc...)

07/31/06 3-Wide He is quite a craftsman.  And he's really a great example of the type of individual that I have a world of respect for that was often drawn to this sport.   What these types of individuals may be lacking in "Flash", they make up for (and then some) in ability!

'm talking about someone who most would say is on the quiet or reserved side...that works well by himself, who has the ability to envision what he needs to make, makes it, and then has the nerve to climb into it and race it.

The type of guy who lets his fabrication skills and driving ability do the talking rather than to be worried about one up'in the Jones's with a new Hummer in the driveway.  My kind of person.
