Comments: Here is the comment that accompanied this photo: "Bonjour! -  It has been some 30 years ....Here is the Hemi -Cuda II in upstate New York, the labour of love has started, time and money will bring this baby back to life sometime ...soon i hope! Thanks to David Rausch who sent me the pictures. Enjoy.  Richard Chartrand.

Note from 3-Wide:  Go figure.... Admittedly I am a dirt track fan first... So how is it that this "Cuda" is one of my all time favorite cars?  This thing is so Cool, that I think we should call it the Cuuda because one "u" just doesn't do it.  I remember seeing this car at the Race of Champions at Trenton in the early 70's.  I couldn't wait for the race to end so that I could go across the track and check it out up close.   When I got there, there was so many people around it, it was hard to get a good picture with my trusty Polaroid.  Guess I wasn't the only one who thought it pinned the "Cool Meter!"

Thanks to all involved for making sure that this one is going to be around for a while.

09/13/04 Scott Pacich Besides this, Jean Guy Chartrand is creating a 1/6th scale model of the Cuda. He found a 1/6th scale Hemi engine in the toy section of a Wal-Mart (why is it that old racers hang out in the toy section), and decided to build a car around it. He's making the chassis out of metal, the body out of aluminum. He has carved the rear end from wood, and made tires and hubs too.
09/13/04 3-Wide Alright... confession time.... doesn't matter why I'm in Walmart or what I'm looking for, but I always find it via the Toy Section and specifically the Model Shelf and then the Hot Wheel rack.  Thought it was just me...
09/13/04 John Bischi Jr That car under restoration actually is Hemi-Cuda II, which (I think) ran from '71-'73.  I did not know it was the second car until I saw pics of the first and then saw the difference.  Also, in '72, the car was right-hand drive, then switched back to left-side for Shampine.
09/14/04 Scott Pacich John, it's definitely the II, and it was switched to left hand drive while Chartrand was still driving it.  It doesn't matter if this car had the driver's seat in the trunk though.  It will always be one of the best looking modifieds ever....
09/26/04 Brian Baker Definitely one of the all-time best looking modifieds - glad to see it's still around.  Wonder where in NY State? Hopefully they photodocument the restoration.  Here is a link to some pictures of the car from when it was active... as well as a few picks of the insane Hemi-Hawk Supermodified:

03/10/05 Tom Bilger I was fortunate to watch Guy Chartrand in the #69 at Plattsburgh,N.Y. while
stationed at Plattsburgh AFB in 1970 and 1971.  I was hoping to stay there for a while, but got shipped to "Nam" the end of "71".
Guy had some great battles with Denis Giroux, Dick Nephew and Andy Romano just to mention a few.  It would be great to see a picture of the #69 after it was completed.

06/28/07 Allen Clark Guess what everyone... I was at Utica-Rome on Sunday 6/24/07 and started talking to a gentleman that I overheard saying something about old modifieds. As we were discussing our passion for old race cars, he said he had some pictures of a car he was presently restoring. He went out to his car and came back in with the photos and to my surprise, it was this car he is restoring.

This photo was taken right in his driveway in northern N.Y. He is a very nice man named Eric Leeson and he invited me to his house to look at the car. Believe me, I will be making the trip very soon to see a car that has as much history as this one.

I raced at Airborne in  Plattsburgh and am very familiar with the car and driver.  Guy Chartrand was located in Montreal and the Hemi Cuda was owned by a MoPar dealer in Potsdam, NY.  This was an unbelievable car.

I can't remember the HP but I can remember Guy having a lot of trouble controlling the beast.  Whenever he stepped on the gas the tires would spin. I can still picture him spinning his tires in the middle of the backstretch at Airborne Speedway.. He brought it down to the Monster Mile in Dover, Delaware but had engine trouble.  That would have been fun to watch him race on a big track.
