I met Fred in the pits at Islip after the 1977 Islip 300.  I think he drove the Flowers owned yellow Pinto #60 that day and got a top 5 finish.  I congratulated him for a good run and told him that this was my 1st time to Islip. He asked me if I enjoyed the show and of course I said yes.   I also advised him  I was from NJ and that I was  at Old Bridge the day he won there (it turned out to be the last race ever there).  I said to him that he is one of my favorites at New Egypt and I root for him whenever he runs Wall too.  So from then on I would always at least just say Hi to him after the races at New Egypt.

Freddy was one of the legends of Long Island Modified racing, his cars always immaculate, a well respected and strong runner up until he retired.  After the races you could always find Fred at the back of his hauler in the pits at Riverhead, beer in one hand, cigarette in the other, a smile on his face, and holding court.  Good guy.
