What A Consolation Prize!

Continuing the theme of our last Senior Moment, I’m sharing a photo memory of the consi race held on Labor Day, September 1st, 1958, at Alcyon Speedway. Joe Klune captured for us the front portion of the 22 car field, as it starts down the home straightaway.

George Haver is on the pole with the #55 of Joe Rosco along side. Then we see: 07 Henry Johnson, 28 Jerry Garten, 19 Bill Lewis, 98 Budd Olsen, 77a Ed Anders, SSS Bob Malzahn, 39 Eddie Adams, 404 Bob Gemenden and the 2A of Jimmy Metzler. A few other “notables” not visible: 47 Fred Mears, 141 Don Strumpf, 88 Ed Lindsay, 137 Chubby Hower, 71E Carl VanHorn, 808 Whip Mulligan, 87 Bob Weisemeyer and 300 Freddie Fehr!

The great memories generated by these old pictures fortunately block out for us the “realities of life” they also document! The condition of the guardrails, the general spectator fencing, weeds etc. etc. couldn’t have been that way at “my Alcyon Speedway”! Maybe I wouldn’t have been so shocked or disappointed when the track closed two years later if I had be more observant of them.

Regardless, let’s just stand here by the fence, enjoy the sun and the terrific race we’re about to see, once more.

03.13.09 rjaustin421 Consi??? The names in the line up sound like a feature line up. Many current racing people do not realize the number of cars at many racetracks in years past. What a great picture!!!
03.13.09 Ed Duncan Russ, That would have been a great feature field at any speedway.  Great picture.
03.13.09 Tom Bilger That day I rode down to Alcyon in the #19. When we got to the infield I hopped out and helped Millicent Lewis (Bill's wife) setup the infield popcorn stand.  I often times would make the cotton candy. When the races were ready to start ,Millicent would chase me out to go watch the races.  I usually would help her at intermission and then she would chase me out again when the Feature was starting.  What a lucky kid I was. The Lewis's were wonderful people.

03.16.09 George Pavlisk Remember that at Old Bridge in those days it was a big sell 25 cars for 25 laps in the feature. (3) heat races and a Consolation race like you see in the photo. 40 or 50 cars to make a 25 car feature.

That is why we call it the GOOD OLD DAYS, not the condition of the stands, track, food that could be fatal if eaten and safety gear of a ³t² shirt,
boots and you went racing.

Thanks for the post, THEY ARE GREAT!!

Take Care
