Comments: Will the 1958 NASCAR Modified Champ Please Sign-In

Its 7 o’clock on a clear Friday evening in Pitman, N.J., as the drivers and pit personnel line up at the sign–in table. Budd Olsen, casually dressed, enjoys a cigarette as he checks out the parking lot for the arrival of his ride for the evening, Busty Luzzo’s black 98 flat back sedan.

In front of the champ, wearing the white shirt and black slacks, is National Park, N.J. driver Jackie Hamilton. He’ll be at the wheel of Lec Bowers’ Clayton Auto Body Shop 400.

As this picture is viewed, the words informal, low keyed, and relaxed, come to mind. The races weren’t going to start until 8:30, allowing time for the local baseball games, grocery shopping and wedding rehearsals to get over so everyone could make it to Alcyon! The program of 3 modified/sportsman heats, a consi and the 25 lap feature event could easily be over by 10:30, allowing plenty of time for reruns later at the local diner! By the way, general admission to the infield was a dollar!

This 50 year old vision is still vivid and alive. The reality of knowing the times depicted will never return really doesn’t matter that much, not when you have the comfort of Senior Moments!

08/03/08 Joel F. Naprstek Just have to say how much I enjoy the Senior Moments category. The
pictures are truly priceless.

Love the little sign-in table and the dress of everyone. As a kid I used
to think it was so cool how alot of the drivers looked wearing short
Wellington boots and short sleeve shirts while driving ... not really safe of course but ...
08/03/08 Doug Schriener Hi Russ- Just saw the latest Sr. Moment on 3 wide and ya never cease to amaze.

Ya bring back such memories for you guys out there and for me here in Minnesota watching the pit sign-in table-who was gonna be there and who could we tag along with being young.  Back when ya built the cars and ya painted the numbers and sponsor names!!

Regards,
Doug Schriener -  Pennock,Minn.
