Anniversary Edition Not Forgotten!

In 1960 Egg Harbor Township celebrated its 250th anniversary. Showing community pride, Charlie Angerman Jr. fielded his unique hobby stock car using the number 250 to advertise the event. Using a ’34 sedan body (my guess of year) and a flathead six cylinder Ford, Charlie won 7 features in the limited division at Vineland Speedway.

The “maroon rocket” had several unique set ups besides the body style. Note the clearance of the left frame rail and the high z’ed kick-up at the back. A large vacuum gauge was mounted where a tach would usually be placed and the car had a manual control cable set up on the distributor so that the spark advance could be controlled by the driver. He would use the vacuum reading to help adjust the timing as he controlled the power of the motor during the race.

I recall it would usually take Charlie the full feature distance to pull off a win. Passing the flathead V/8 Fords within the last few laps, he had to run the high groove on the track all the way around to keep his RPM’s up on his flathead 6. I remember hearing at the time; the 250’s body was lost in a garage fire at the end of the season.

The chassis was salvaged and it was used with a newer sportsman coupe X15. This car, with 1937 Ford coupe body shortened 8 inches, debuted at Vineland Speedways opener in 1961. The old flathead six had been replaced with a T-Bird engine and a 4 barrel carb!

The X15 shortened coupe never handled or ran as well as the old sedan. The 250 anniversary car was one of those “magic combinations” that worked!

07/25/08 Bill Ore I remember Charlie Angerman in the hobby class at Vineland in the early '60's in a red #77. He had a lot of wins there, too.
