Comments from Russ: Sonny Strupp uses his arms to brace himself as he hits the fence at Alcyon Speedway in Pitman, New Jersey, Labor Day 1959. Note the lack of a shoulder harness! The R12’s (Rambler 12) were fielded by a Rambler Dealer and former motorcycle racer, Pat Ronco, from Bangor, PA. In the 50’s, most tracks, along with NASCAR, required the stock car and motor to be of the same manufacturer. No Chevy motor in a Ford car, etc. Because of this, Pat fielded some unique and interesting looking stock cars. Ray captured the essence of the era with this great shot. The dirt being churned-up by the wheels, the driver being thrown around and the dust and smoke being generated, are all shown. Memory tells me the R12 visited South Jersey only on special occasions. Its regular home I recall as Nazareth, Allentown or Middletown. Senior Moment by Russ Dodge |
