Sometimes We Get Lucky With Picture Backgrounds

3Widers, whether active participants on the site or just observers, spend hours studying pictures.  Often it's not the main theme or focus of the photo that is always most interesting but rather what can be discovered in the background.   It may be a car, driver, mechanic or just a regular civilian who we recognize, that starts the mind working.  In the case of this Senior Moment, a darn hat!

This Fall of 1961 photo was taken at Vineland Speedway and features the 2 of car owner Lucky Jordan and driver of that day, Walt Donald (Kinsley).   A study  of the car reveals the support brackets and the wing mounted on the car. Not being able to extract info on the car on the other side of the pits, I come back and check out Lucky Jordan , who I recognize.  Then I see it!  "THE HAT" he is wearing says Tiona and has the Chief Tiopet emblem printed on it.  Wow!

Many photos you'll see from the early 60's will feature the driver in a Tiona T shirt or the large round Tiona oil sticker featuring an Indian head, on the car.  In most instances a case or two of oil was the sponsorship, some got it by the drum.

This photo was taken by Barry Alrich, who work at Tiona for a while and  fielded the Tiona Petroleum sportsman 64 driven by Billy Wark, Les Farley and to feature wins by Al Tasnady, Jackie McLaughlin .  About a decade has passed since Barry relocated his residence and while moving gave me the Tiona materials he had including cans, stickers, patches and other items, that would now be memorabilia.  No hat though!.

I know I may be the only one or at least one of a very small number who collect Tiona memorabilia and yes I'm sure I would have to pay royally for one if I had the opportunity! Two thoughts come out of this.  One is keep studying those picture you don't ever know what mystery you might solve and really to share the fun of collecting.  Having something to collect provides that "fun of opening a toy at Christmas" feeling when you discover a new treasures.  Collections don't have to be large or expensive.

Thanks for listening.  Senior moment by Russ Dodge

I always remembered the TIONA stickers on the roof of Lucky Jordans cars, when Bob Pickell dpove the DEUCE. But never saw the product in any store.

WOW!! Another great photo and story.  What would we do  without your wonderful observations and photo collection? I for one really appreciate these excellent stories, and as for Tiona Oil, I can’t say there were too many drivers in my area that used it. I don’t remember seeing any of their decals, but you know how our memories can be. Keep those stories coming Russ.
