Every Once In A While...

Regardless if you are a collector or not, every once in a while you see a photo that will "knock your socks off". I had this experience a couple weeks ago when Bob Pickell Jr. and I had a chance to sit down and spend some time going over photo albums together.

The photo above "lit me up" as it took me back to a period in racing which will never return. Can you imagine the memory created that day for the kids who were able to go around Nazareth Speedway with Otto Harwi in his race car? The photo says it all. Check out the families lined up along the fence taking pictures and sharing the excitement of the day. "Litigation" wasn't a word at the top of everyone's vocabulary back then. The promoter didn't have to work about a law suit if a "scratch" resulted from a climb thru a window. I think good judgment prevailed!

I'm wondering how many of you looking at this Moment were lucky enough to take one of those rides? How about sharing with us your memory. Thank you Bob Jr. for sharing this photo with me.

12.11.10 George Perkins This photo brings back some memories. We started going to Nazareth, I guess we were 17...a little to old to go for a ride. Truthfully, they probably had a cut off age or we would have been muscling our way in line. :)

I can remember a photo in AARN of Will Cagle showing Jerry Fried his broken mirror, the result of hauling kids around the track.
12.11.10 3-Wide That kid wasn't a young Tom Hager was he? (lol)
12.11.10 Ned Stites III This picture has become an instant favorite. It's great to see Otto in the 10. I first saw Otto in this car at Nazareth on my initial visit there.  What wonderful memories this brings back. I got to ride with Frankie Schneider at Vineland around 1961. He was going pretty fast too! I hung tight on the rollbar.

Thank you for showing how much fun we had.
12.11.10 Warren Wetzel I recall that the date of that photo is approx. 1962. What a tough and good looking car that was. I believe Jimmy Metzler owned it as Harwi had recently been relieved from driving the Cope #1. Way in the back ground, the car with the square grill screen, is an early Bobby Bottcher #44. Another great shot from old friend John Reilly.

Thanks for posting.

12.12.10 Joel Naprstek This era was my favorite time for the modified-sportsman cars. How could you not love these cars? The big tires, the stance and the way they ran along with the individuality of the cars and drivers. A great, great time to be sure. As late at the mid 1970's Fonda Speedway in NY was still giving kids rides like this.
12.12.10 Kevin Newman what a GREAT PHOTO!!!...it appears that the car is totally packed w/ kids!...we can't see the back window at all...I can also see a tiny face just above the dash on the drivers lap (haha, is he driving?)...bet the kids will never forget this day!
12.13.10 Steve Cameron  I was one of the fortunate kids to get a ride with the great Bill Wimble. I think it took place on, or around Easter Sunday since there was an accompanying Easter egg hunt in the infield the same day. Just one of the many aspects of racing in that era that could never be repeated today. Thanks for posting!

12.13.10 Barry Pursell This is my picture from the 60’s and I remember it like it was last Sunday. Rags Carter was my favorite as a kid and this car filled up so quickly. But I did get a chance to get in Will Cagle’s number 24 and he became one of my favorites of the 60’s.
12.13.10 Donald Lawson  I believe that George Hauk from Clinton owned this car, He kept it at his fathers place on route 22 at the bottom of Jug town mountain. Otto drove for him for many years.
12.13.10 Edward T. Smith This is a classic picture... I attended Nazareth in 1962 when I was 10 years old... I am trying to see if I can find myself in this wonderful picture... I remember standing by the wall at the start finish line waiting for my favorite driver Harry Moore...I remember climbing through the passenger side window and getting a warm greeting from Harry... I could not believe how bumpy the ride was... It made me appreciate even more the talents of the drivers... It was great to see the kids packed into Frankie Schnieder's and Tas's cars... I can not imagine anything like this happening today as the track owners could never afford all of the insurance required for such an event... Thanks for posting this picture.... This was a wonderful era of stock car racing that can never be repeated....
12.14.10 Jerry Wildrick I believe Penn Can did this same thing this year. They had cars come out on the track and gave kids a ride around the oval. And nobody sued!!!!
12.11.10 George Pavlisko We STILL do this down in Georgia. There is a two seater late model that was
built and it is called the KIDS CAR. Very Popular it is run on contributions
from the pits.
I got a ride WAY BACK WHEN that hooked me forever into racing, now I drive
myself around, LOL.

03.08.12 Linda Huff Muessig The white car with the red number 10 driven by Otto Harwi was owned by the Hauck family. My Uncle Andy and his two sons. The car was kept at Andy's home in Bethlehem Township, aka West Portal, Hunterdon County. We followed them and the car and Otto from Flemington, Harmony, Nazareth as well as Orange County, New York. I'd love to have a pic of Otto driving that car. Thanks
