Sonny "F" Bombs The Grandstand!

An A+ rating would have to go to Walter Donald's 999 black 1937 Ford sedan on page 41 of the 60's section of the vault.

This great photo shared by Bob Lowery, shows one of the most pristine stock cars that ever hit the track. Walt raced the car on asphalt at Vineland, N.J. and on dirt at Flemington and Nazareth Speedways.

This beauty, like most of Walt's early cars were wrench by Sonny Dornberger, who is held by many as a "creative wizard" in stock car racing. This sedan is the inset photo on our Senior Moments picture above.

One of their competitors each week at Vineland was Tommy Elliott. Tommy liked to keep tabs on his competition and was very much interested in "keeping -up" on what suspension set-ups were being used. He would make a stop at Walt's car each week and get down on his back and check out the underside of the car.
A "ritual" which eventually got Sonny and Walt annoyed.

As sharp as the 999 sedan was, on August 25, 1961, Walter Donald (Kinsley) debuted a 1937 Ford coupe that was even more spectacular in appearance! It had a flawless shinny black paint job and white pin stripes. Tastefully done, the coupe would "knock you eyes out"!

Knowing without a doubt an inspection of the underside of this new car could not be passed up by Tommy, Sonny got under the car at home and with white paint lettered the "F-Bomb" in large print for Tommy to see when he look up at the underside of the coupe.

NOT IN THE PLAN WAS FOR WALT TO "DUMP" THE NEW COUPE IN WARM-UPS COMING OUT OF THE 4TH TURN WITH THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR FACING THE GRANDSTAND!

Needless to say the wrecker crew worked super fast getting the new coupe back up on four wheels!

10.13.10 Charlie Miller What a fantastic story! You just know somewhere two old time racefans are sitting around remembering the good old days saying " Remember that time that stock car over at the race track flipped over and it had the F word underneath it ." If they only knew our own Russ Dodge , or how to get to the Vault , they could find the answer . Thanks Russ for remembering all this for us.!!! Just my two cents worth, the #999 is one nice looking racer.
