Taking Time Out!

Thanks to Bob Pickell Jr., my mind has had another Senior Moment workout.  Like so many of us in the Senior category, I like to think I'm "up on things" in today's world and have always resented "old people" who continually remind everyone that thing were better "back when"!

Then, a photo like this one appears and darn it, I become one of them.

Budd Olsen, Al Tasnady, Frankie Schneider and Bob Pickell share smiles with the Pine Car Derby winners at a Cub Scout Pine Wood Run-off.

Do you think these three winners could be any prouder?  Do you think they will remember the evening?  Do you think the four "Legends" could fake those smiles?

I'm sure this activity may have been during the off racing season but what difference does that make. They "took time out" to share their sport and probably gain "life-long" fans!

What made those times great for us was not that the racing was any better, but there were fewer recreational distractions to draw on potential race fans. Life was different in that more time was focused on the total experience of going to, coming from and being a 24/7 race fan.

The development of technology and methods of communication will never allow us to return to the past. (past meaning the 80's now maybe!)  People react and adapt to their environment.  So sit back in that grandstand, enjoy that sausage sandwich and watch the show. Enjoy making new old memories for the future!

My final thought is that in all fairness, today's drivers would be no different from our Legends pictured if the opportunity presented itself.

It's a different world.

01.09.10 3Wide Great stuff Russ...  About 8 years ago we had driver's Gene Stravinski and Mike Lyons on hand for our Pinewood Derby Night with the scouts in Allentown, NJ, and the year before that we had Pete Brittain.  Great times and great memories for all.  I also appreciate the comment about not being bitter about the present, but instead to be a part of it... enjoy it... because as hard as it is for some us to believe, these will become the good old days for those 40 and under!
