04/17/07 BOB LAMOND It appears as though this car has a square tube frame leading me to believe this car is a super sportsman. If that's the case, isn't it possible that this picture was taken at Silver Spring Speedway?

If not, it could be the first turn at Williams Grove (notice what appears to be a small maintenence shed at the bottom of the hill in the background...just like Williams Grove.

04/28/07 Rick Shive This is definitely a sprint car.I think what you're seeing as square tubing is a full belly pan which wraps up around the tubing.Super sportsman didn't(and don't)run injectors.
04/27/07 Scott Mervine I talked to Gary and he believes the photo is from Selinsgrove circa 1973. It is an early Tobias tube chassis and the car was owned by Russ Smith from the Williamsport, PA area.  Russ owned a Ford dealership and the "Camperland" business so the car was known as the "Camperland Special".
05/17/07 Steve McClure OK Rick. You are absolutely correct about the sportsman racers. Having grown up in eastern modified country and moving to Central PA in the late 70's I've been following sprints for the last 20 years. But that is definitely turn one at The Grove. I found another picture on the TVR website taken at a day race from the same angle and the photo is captioned by the photographer as being Williams Grove.
07/19/07 Jim Murrow Gary is still setting the speedways on fire as he flies around them in his beautiful jet black URC Sprint Car. He still wins his share of Features, too! A real nice Guy and a living legend. ( He does look a little more like Santa Claus, than a race driver, with his white hair and full white beard these days). Santa never through his sleigh into a corner on dirt at 120 MPH as hard as Gary always did and still does with a race car , though. All the way around, he's " My kinda Guy" - If I can ever afford enough paper, I'll do a story on him. - Jim Murrow
