This is a most interesting picture. I would guess Gerhardt is the driver. The engine is a small block. Reading rules were small blocks weighed 2250, big blocks 2450. A lot of teams ran small blocks believing the reduced weight helped handling and on Reading's tacky clay handling was the key. Note the driver is smoking a cigarette. Note also engine by Davey. In those days everybody built their own engines, unlike today with manufactured engines. At Reading many teams split the purse 40-40-20, owner-driver-engine builder, the builder's job being that important. One last thought, ATCO was a high buck team, no expense was spared, always top notch well maintained, clean equipment. |
