from George Jr: Here's a great picture of my Dad, George Gwynn, Sr.
following a sportsman/modified feature win at Alcyon Speedway. The year is 1957. Dad
competed at Wilmington Speedway, Georgetown Speedway and Alcyon. Due to business
commitments he didn't get an opportunity to compete on a full time basis, but had some
success on a limited schedule. Jack Hart was a great friend to Dad and helped him get going with the three race cars he had during his career. I'm not sure of the identity of the other gentleman in the picture, but I do know that he was a NASCAR official. |

07/13/07 | Russ Dodge | This photo shows Mayor Hall, of Pitman, N.J., presenting the flag to
George Gwynn for winning the opening heat. I don't believe it was in 1957, however. Several photos in the Alcyon program booklets show George in the 23 sedan, on September 16, 1955. In one picture the car is involved in a wreck. The car has the mechanic's name as Poncho, painted on the side. I'm sorry I don't have the complete early records from 1955 to verify the date. The 1957 records do indicate it was not in that season. Hope this helps out. A great Walt Chernokal photo! Thanks Russ Dodge |
