Comments: Comments From Tammy:  This is Tom Backes lettering my nieces Masters car for The local soapbox Derby.  Even after all these years (at least 32 years), Tom was still doing what he loved to do.   My Niece went to Ackron Ohio and her car was one of the nicest cars there due to the lettering Tom did.  ALL FREE HAND!

01/17/04 3-Wide I could never figure out why the Dave Piscope owned Polecat #39 driven by Tas or the Taylor #93 driven by Dick Havens, or the #47 also driven by Dick Havens had that special professional look to them.  And then driver Ray Neary told me that they were all lettered by this same fellow from around Morrisville, Pa.  That is why we made room for Tom Backes in the Vault.  I'm sure many of us enjoyed his work and never knew who the man behind the brush was.  Thanks for sending the picture Tammy.
01/29/04 Mark Yaple I think this is the guy who lettered the 11-7 of George Ault for us in the mid seventies although I can't be sure. One thing I remember is him always with a constant thermos of coffee by his side. Could this be the same person?
