03.08.17 3-Wide Fred - How did you know Mike - Through racing?
03.09.17 Fred D We all grew up in Franklin Township together. Mike's dad had a body shop in Franklin and also ran United Engine Rebuilders in New Brunswick, which was right down the road from California Speed & Sport Shop on Jersey Ave. I went to Franklin High School with Mike and later with Jimmy.

I use to hang around the the body shop when the purple and yellow #7 was being built. Mike's brother Butch and his father taught me about building race cars. I built my 2nd coupe, a 1937 Chevy, while hanging around them and thus the similarity with the Purple Coupe. Including with this group of guys was also Tommy Cimpko, Johnny and Manny Harroll who all lived in the vicinity of our farm. I use to go to all the tracks with Mike and Butch, when I was not racing. At the races, the circle also included Craig McCaughey and Fred DeGroot. Mike was always around but if you knew Mike he was always going someplace with somebody. That was his personality.

The King Chevy cars were first built at Johnny Harroll's place and then later at Tommy Cimpko's place. Tommy let me drive the #7 a few times and then got me the ride in the #122 for Joe Scamardella. I got my first modified feature at East Windsor driving this car. Sammy Beavers was running the #121. I still have a 1972 Chevelle that I brought from Joe at King Chevrolet in Staten Island.

Patti's cousin, Roseanne was going out with Butch Grbac and that's how we met. Patti and her cousin Bonnie ran Mike's fan club. Mike introduced me to her after the races one weekend at Flemington. Mike had a really great personality and always made me laugh. Such a good person taken too soon. It was a sad day when we lost him.
