Comments: Photo comment provided by Fred Voorhees:  The late Ray Bateman sits on the crowded Flemington homestretch waiting to get underway with the next event. Ray was one of the nicest guys in the pit area and left us way too early!

04/12/04 Glenn Grafton If I remember correctly, Ray was also involved in winter sports competing in Olympic Luge events.

Ray was my doubles partner on the Olympic Luge Team in 1980 and 1984.  We considered ourselves pioneers in the sport and gave it all we had.  We won 4 National Championships together.  Ray’s energy was endless.  He loved to compete. And was a great friend.

One of the best races I ever saw there was Ray Bateman and Jimmy Horton run side by side without ever touching (I think), for at least 20 laps, can't remember that happening often.
