Comments: Comment from Steve:  Here are three photos of Arneys Mount Speedway taken by Carl Blue in 1963. They are Carl's original photos from his collection, and all are pictures of his sisters in law driving his go cart.

Photo 1 is taken at the end of the frontstretch entering turn 1.

Photo 2 is taken exiting the first turn onto the frontstretch from the opposite direction. You can see the dragstrip extending beyond the straight past the first turn fence.

Photo 3 is taken in the first turn area.

A picture is worth a thousand words!  These pictures with the go kart are priceless!!  They really show the layout giving information hidden by the "growth of time."

01.15.14 3Wide An interesting thing to consider here is that at this point (1963) it looks like the speedway was not being used as an oval or as a dragstrip based on the overgrowth in the infield, over he wooden fence and along the frontstretch.  Notice too (in the middle photo) the big wedge of asphalt that had been removed between the drag strip and the entry of turn one.  It brings up questions that I hope we'll be able to figure out:
1.  What year was the last year that an oval track race was held?
2.  What was the last year that the track hold a recognized drag race?
3.  Did the track ever have both an operational oval track and an operational oval track simultaneously?

Today a kart like shown in those pics is worth more than the original cost.
