Top photo:  This is my 1990 rookie car at Flemington. It is a Brightbill Kreitz chassis car that I bought from Russ Thatcher.  I've still got it too.  I believe Russ told me its a 1979, and that he bought it from his brother in-law Mark Plummer.

Bottom photo:  Opening day - notice anything about cockpit? No clutch,,, It was a two speed powerglide with a hand operated hydraulic valve instead of a torque converter. you fed the throttle, and instead of operating a hand clutch, you opened a valve to allow trans fluid to start circulating.  You gradually opened the valve just the same as feathering a clutch, and when you stopped, you had to throw that valve shut or you could stall.  Tthen as you got up to speed, you clicked a tiny lever to shift into second.  There was also a lever to help get you moving without stalling out, but I never used it - luckily I had enough ambidextrous coordination to get the rolling onto the track and into gear - we always joked that it was like playing one of those old one man band instruments.
