03/08/03 Todd L: Gary was fast wherever he went, This car was an Olsen creation I believe that may have been loaned to another team in that teams quest for a title?
11/28/03 3-Wide Congratulations on winning the 2003 Sportsman Championship - The thing you gotta  love about this guy is that he is a WINNER.   Whatever class he sets his sites on he does so with winning in mind so much so that he is willing to challenge the conventional in order to be in a position to win.  I may be wrong on this, but it seems he went from Late Model to Modified, to Super Stock, to Sportsman.  He has won in all of them and now has claimed championships in 3 out of the 4.  There is no doubt that if the right opportunity came along in a Modified, he'd be a good candidate  to make that 4 out of 4!.

By the way, does anyone have a picture of the red #68 Late Model that Gary used to destroy the field with week after week at Flemington back in the mid 80's?

11/28/03 Chop315 Does anyone remember when Gary Butler was caught running an over sized motor at flemington?  Sorry cant remember what year it was I know it was in the 80's.  I can remember that he was very fast and a couple of driver put up money for a tear down inspection.  Joe Hall was one of the inspectors  - Found over sized pistons lost his points and was banned for the rest of the year
11/28/03 3-Wide I don't remember that, but you know what they say... it's only cheating if they catch you, and if that was the case, as unfortunate as it is if true, that red #68 didn't drive itself around the square.  As far as this year goes, Gary got the job done with a lot less than most as the word is that he bought out Todd Singley's (or Scott?) operation for about $2500 and got the Sod Buster himself to build a bullit that could rip up a little sod and a little clay as Gary's consistency was enough to get the job done at NES this year.  Maybe Gary or crew can shed a little light on what caught the attention of the inspectors back in the 80's at Flemington...
12/14/03 John Mc Just happened to read the comments by "Chop315" about Gary Butler.

I built the Late Model Gary won all those races in, and:

NEVER was he found illegal!

He moved up to the mods w/ Barker Bus, and got fired on Monday after running 3rd on Fri nite @ B'port, 2nd on Sat @ Flem, & 2nd on Sun nite @ Naz, the 1st weekend out in a new Olsen car Chesson just bought the week before, after putting up w/ some morphidite for the beginning of the season w/ all these weird ideas in it.    If your name wasn't Hearn, Pauch or Epright, you weren't good enough to run Chesson's cars at this time. Anyway, he then bought a car from Ray Pursell and ran up front @ Flem in the sportsman div. Flem paved, he crashed real hard there, then decided EWS was the way to go (as did about a million other guys).   Never once was he ever found illegal for anything.  (edited by the allmighty at the power brokers at 3-Wide's Picture Vault)

12/14/03 3-Wide Well, here's where free speech gets into the loose stuff guys...  I like to think that I post 99.9% of what I receive.  I never post details of tragic events and I also will not knowingly post anything that I believe to be untrue at the time it is submitted for posting.

We obviously have 2 stories here, and having been a fan at Flemington through the time Gary was unbeatable in the Late Model class, I do not remember anything about him cheating.   I know there were a heck of a lot of guys who probably tried to explain the fact that he was kicking everybody's ass on a weekly basis all due to his alleged cheating, but I don't remember hearing or reading anything about that.

I personally think Gary was spanking them because he is a damn good driver who takes on this sport a lot differently than others.  He is extremely professional in his approach to being successful in this sport.  He is always looking for an advantage and does not become content with running second for very long.  Nor does he make excuses for poor results.  He analyzes, and comes up with an improved approach for the next event, and so on, and so on, and that's why he moves forward in every division that he takes on.

In an effort to maintain free speech, I'll leave all of the above posts on the board until we get this worked out.  It's possible that Chop315 got the story on very good authority and as cited above,  would certainly be one explanation for Gary's absolute dominance of the class.  However, if some additional information is not offered up to support the alleged cheating, including something in print, or specific accounts of those involved directly, then I'll remove any post that claims that cheating occurred without substantiation.

We've got a great culture here in the Vault with a nice mix of fans, competitors, owners, crew members and so on and I think we all are interested in remembering some really great times, but also making sure we check the accuracy along the way....

Thanks - 3 Wide

01/09/03 Rick Shive I have to agree with John Mc.If Gary was suspended or caught cheating, there was never a word about it written or spoken, and I don't remember him missing any Sat. nights at the Square.  These stories also exist about several other drivers over the years, again with no proof, except for someone "seeming to remember it."  I've known Gary since he was a little kid.  He's just a great driver who if anything, happened to have a car, that was ahead of it's time.
