Comments: Comments from Pete:  Paul Ielmini Jr drove the Black and Gold Sportsman 67 at East Windsor and Flemington from '77 to '81.  I attached a photo of the car. This picture is from '81 at Flemington. This car started the large rear deck for more downforce on the rear end. After this car was seen on opening day in '81, several other cars started to do the same including the Billy Pauch in the famous "L" car.

06/03/05 3-Wide Was it a Chevette at one point?
06/05/05 J. STINNETT I THINK THIS CAR WAS A PONTIAC "ESPIRIT" JOE.  A CHEVETTE CLONE.
06/30/05 Paul Ielmini It is a AMC Spirit. The Gremlin had a big blind spot. In 1981 AMC cut out the triangle and call it the Spirit and they also made a 4WD version call the Eagle. It was an approved body for DIRT that year too. I don't remember anyone else using it for a race car and not many people bought them for the road.
07/01/05 3-Wide AMC sure did make some strange cars back then.... Gremlin, Matador, Hornet...  It's kind of strange the way the Gremlin came along around 71 or 72, which was right around the time guys were looking to do some different things with the bodies...   It really turned out to be probably the easiest body to hang over a roll cage!

I don't know if it was the increasing scarcity of coupes and sedans... or the desire to be lightweight... or the added downforce and sidewall that the relatively flat paneled Gremlin provided...  but around 73 - 75 it seemed everybody had to have one!

07/02/05 Dave Bailey I can remember as a kid.....maybe 10 years old at the time, leaving to go to Flemington at around 2:30 on a Sat. with my brother, and my dad. Our excitement would start early as my dad would drive us past Pauls car loaded on the trailer in front of his house ready to go!
07/13/05 Joe H /Olmezer Apraisal i believe i had this car at our shop at one point squaring the rear clip when it got bent, i remember paul getting a second or third at flemington right after that.
