Comments: Well... do we talk about the driver in this one, or about the car...  Here's an idea - How about both!

Oliver Butler was one of the smoothest out there picking up victories in the Silliman #4 and the Menschner #21 in the early 70's.  In fact, its hard to talk about the early 70's at Flemington and East Windsor without mentioning Ollie.

The silver #21 pictured above was owned by superwrench Fred Menschner, who at a very young age (early 20's) was in the game as an owner, week after week against against a few other guys you just might have heard of:  Deasey, Fodor, Carberry, Brenn, Norcia...   Fred's another one of those Morrisville, Pa/Trentonn NJ area guys who paid close attention whenever Wally Marks was doing the talking...

This was such a great sport back when the winner wasn't determined by who spent the most, but by who was the most determined.

07/06/06 Carl W. Silliman Hum. 71 or 72? Ollie was still running for my uncle Al Silliman and infact won the modified state points championship in 1972 and I also believe winning (4) 100 lappers at Flemington that year (he won 4 in one year and I don't remember if it was in 1972). I know that feat was never duplicated and I know that it never will, at lease at Flemington. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. And on the track he was one of the most professional, consistent and "cleanest" drivers.
07/06/06 3-Wide Hum.  72 or 73 then.  I know that Ray Neary drove the car in 70 and possibly in 71...  I think Oliver picked up the ride afterwards so that's where I came up with 71 or 72.  Giving it a little more thought, its probable that it was more like 72 or 73 as I know that Ray drove a silver and red sedan that Fred Menschner was also involved in, but I don't think it worked nearly as good as the coupe.  In fact, I think they might have brought back the coupe after trying to make a go at it with the sedan.

Hey Fred...  How about a little help here!  (Thanks -)
07/07/06 Bill Walker Two interesting notes, 1 the downtube frame, 2. the "cowcatcher" strapped to the front bumper, this must have been warm-ups when the track was still wet and muddy.
07/08/06 3-Wide #3:  Extra circle holes cut just behind the rear windows on each side to help move the air through the car... and maybe to improve the ability to hear somebody to know when you cleared 'em!
07/10/06 Brian C. Loutrel This picture was taken in 1973.  Butler won the NJ state championship in 1972 in the Silliman #4 and moved to the Menschner #21 in 1973.  I recall him being in the car only one year, switching to the #45 Pinto in 1974.
07/11/06 Walter Onora The 45 Pinto was owned by Ken Reebe from Staten Island. The Reebe Family were long time owners. Owned quite a few cars that races at Weissglass Stadium!
07/11/06 3-Wide I think I remember Grbac in one of those #45's at one point.   Speaking of other cars that Oliver Butler also ran, he also drove the Spivey Auto Parts #400 at East Windsor around 75 or 76.

I don't remember exactly when, but I know that he passed away at a very young age.  I don't think it was long after that.  I remember his as being very smooth, very steady and always near the front.
07/23/06 Joe Crisefi Does anybody know if this was the "O" car?  I seem to remember Butler running in a silver coupe with a bright red or orange "O" on the side??
07/23/06 3-Wide I don't remember a "0", but this car was silver with a red frame and red numbers.
