Comments: Comment from Mike:  This was Dick Tobias' new ride for the 1974 1973 season.  It was another version of the famous Super Dog #17.  This photo was taken in April 1974 1973.   Three races later he was strapped into the Anthony's Furniture # 1 where he virtually revitalized his career and went on to more fame and fortune.  Photo was taken in the Reading  Fairgrounds pit area.

11/27/05 Scott Pacich Mike, didn't Toby actually get into the number 1 mid-way through the '73 season when Varner got hurt?
11/29/05 Mike Feltenberger. I was working with some 1974 photos for the magazine and when I found the Dick Tobias one I just kept right on working with it.  Thank Scott for noting the error for me.  I was there when Donnie Varner broke his wrist and Toby stepped in.   Thanks for making the correction.
12/11/05 Dave Schittler This pic is from 1974. My dad was a crew member for Dick Meals' #44 when Red Coffin drove it. In the background is the first Pinto bodied car they built. I'm pretty certain my dad is the one kneeling beside the car. The #22 on the trailer is Red's coupe from 1974. That is Red standing between the cars in the brown jacket. I'm also pretty sure that 1974 was the year Chamberlain ran the Pinto bodied car you see in the backgound.

Toby did take over the #1 in 1973. I'm pretty certain that Donnie Varner injured his arm on Saturday, June 2. I believe the double features on that Saturday were to makeup a couple of rainouts. Red won one of the features that night, his first win in the #44. Toby was in the car on Sunday, June 3 and won the 50 lap feature. Toby ran the Anthony's #1 again in 1974. I think a few others drove the #17 early in the year.
02/15/06 Matt Bahre "RED COFFIN" has to be one of the greatest racing names ever!

Tobias did not run this car very often. Several sprint car drivers, including Larry Dickson, Lynn Paxton and Lee Osborne spent more seat time in it than he did.  Jimmy Keppley also drove the car to an outstanding finish in an Eastern States 200.
