This car I often hear referred to as a Sonny Dornberger copy of a Weld car.
The # 99 Meme drove for Sonny was the original # 91 Weld car.

I can't remember name of who bought it from Weld, but they sold it to Sonny. When Sonny got it, he cut it up and shortened the wheel base and made some other changes to the car along the way. Meme loved that car, said it was a rocket. With this being said, there you have it, this was originally a Weld car with a Dornberger touch. |
02.16.13 | 3-Wide | Was there more than one Dornberger #99? - I've been told from quite a few folks that the #99 was not a Weld car and that it was actually joked back in the day that Sonny out welded "Weld" referring to the job that was done in creating the #99. Maybe somebody out there will be able to verify if somebody actually sold a Weld car to Sonny and if so, who was it, and what # and color was it when Sonny got it. I'll wait till we get more info before changing my mind, but I'm still thinking that the #99 wasn't a Weld car, but I've got an open mind. There's enough guys still around that should be able to verify that it was or wasn't a Weld car. |
