Comments: What a great photo...  There's one of the all time greats, Bobby Pickell - looking very "70s'ish" with those cool bell bottoms and the porkchop sideburns.  But what I really like about this photo is that it reminds me of a time when most of the modifieds that rolled into the pits had a hired gun as the driver!

Sure there were the bigger teams of the day whether it was Piscopo's #39 or Deasey's #707 from the late 60's... Or the Cozze #44's or the Taylor #93...  or the Ken Brenn Sr. #24...  Almost forgot about it, but like I said, many of the modified drivers back in the day showed up with their helmet bag and would walk over to their ride and let their driving do all the talking... and if their driving said the right thing, then they'd be back the following week too!

What I also now remember, and what this photo indicates, is that a lot of the modified teams weren't what you would call high dollar, but on any given night... when the air was right... and if the driver could keep it clean through his heat race...  victory would come their way.  That's the case with the McConnell owned #28 above as I'm pretty sure Bob Pickell was a feature event winner with this car.

You also got to love that the car was towed with about a 10 year old pick up... with a few tires thrown in the bed, along with a small tool box, a jack and a fuel can...  It was a time when somebody with a lot of mechanical knowledge could field a car for a reasonable amount, and could enjoy watching somebody wheel their entry around with the best of what others had too...

Unfortunately, technology and $'s drove the small, independent owner out of the picture and now for the most part 3/4's of the modifieds in the pits at any local speedway are driven by the guy who also has to foot all the bills...   Seems more guys were interested in being owners when trips to the "speed shop" weren't as frequent, in ever at all!
