Provider's comments: This one almost didn't make it into "The Vault" because of our strict image quality standards - NOT! (We at the vault are more interested in the memories that the photo can provide rather than whether it is a professional picture.)  What this picture lacks in quality is more than made up by the memories that this picture brings back for those of us that were fortunate to have been at Trenton for the 1974 "Race of Champions".  This picture was taken as Fred and Bugsy came down for the photo finish.  The picture was taken from the main grandstand just before the start/finish line.  If you listen close you can almost here the great Bill Singer doing the final charge to the checker...

03/12/03 Mark Southcott Fred DeSarro in the Len Boehler #3 winning the 1974 Race of Champions for the correct spelling.....
04/23/06 Ed Smith This is my favorite. (The photo above) with DeSarro ans Stevens crossing the finish at Trenton in '74. I was there when it happened. Made me a DeSarro fan forever, even though the only times I got to see them (asphalt mods) run was the ROC.

I was from Salisbury, MD at the time and mostly hit the local dirt shows at US 13 (now Delaware Intl or some such) and Georgetown. Racing was sooooo much better when the promoters took the time to cut the tracks deeper and work in the water properly. Vicari was the master, but Mr. Cathell at US 13 did a fine job too. Now it's nothing but hard, slick dirt everywhere you go. Such a shame. Thanks for the memories.
12.30.10  Davemod44  I was at Thompson that tragic day, the throttle stuck wide open on the backstretch and the retainer at that time was a 20 foot dirt bank, Fred went up and over it.   Bugsy drove his 15 to turn 3 and was the first to Fred's aid.

So thanks 3 Wide.  I like Fred am a RI resident . I have traveled to many race tracks , 0 in RI , and I have seen many of the drivers on this site who were travelers like me.  Now as I travel the net I find this site to be the best!
