Comments: No secret here, my favorite driver of all time Al Michalchuk may not have been spectacular because of his wins, but he was spectacular.  Little did we know at the time, but Al was one of the last of his kind to do it all himself with homebuilt stuff against the Weld and Grant King and the other specially designed chassis and speed shop parts that were coming into the sport.  Al had to work a lot harder with a lot less and on this day, Al won his modified heat race against some of those high $ cars that I mentioned.  But ultimately, guys like Al had to move aside in the name of "progress" as guys began to focused more on outspending each other rather than out running each other.   Today it's about custom chassis, loaded end to end with specialty "bought" parts, covered with flat aluminum panels, but it wasn't always like that.....

01/10/05 Kevin Varanyak Al was one of my favorite drivers in the 70's he worked on my first couple of street cars one of the last great shade tree mechanic
