Comments: Comment from Bill: Langhorne pit area possibly 1965. Believe the car unloading from the trailer is the Cope number 1 and driver Rags Carter. The car closest to the wall could be the 99 of Malzahn. Also notice how much the track drops off going down the front stretch and how much speed the cars would carry down into what I guess would be called turn 1.

09/28/07 Russ Dodge Bill, you're on the money with the year 1965. This Bob Farlee photo supports your info.

The 2 was added to the number for scoring purposes at Langhorne. The track was circular in shape and your right about what would be the first turn. When they built the speedway, that area was low, so they built it up with the tree trunks from other areas of the track, as they cleared the ground. As the trunks began to rot under the track, the surface in that area was always a swampy mess. "Puke Hollow" was the term used by drivers to describe that section of the track.

The October race at Langhorne was a happening! The day usually ended with drag races on the drag strip in the infield.  People would line up along the strip and as the crowd got bigger, those closest to the track started to be shoved out onto the strip. As the cars came down for their run, the people "fanned out" as they went by. Needless to say, the "alcohol" was running cool that day! The Police were really pretty good about it. To shut it down, 2 police cars got in the line waiting to drag. I still remember the two squad cars sitting side by side on the starting line and the "self-appointed" starter, trying to wave them off!

Sorry for the digression, just another great remembrance triggered by a visit to the vault. Thanks, Russ Dodge
09/30/07 John Stover Track was paved in 1965.Surface still looks like black oiled dirt in picture.
09/30/07 Mike Shaub It looks like the yellow car aside,of the #99 might be the Falcon #3 of Pete
Corey!!

09/30/07 Jim Brewer Great pic and car identification is right on the money. I think the year is off however. When they paved Langhorne in 1965 they added a pit row guard rail (not in this pic) separating the racing surface from the pits. The track in the pic is dirt so it can't be later than 1964 and based on the cars I think that is the year. That was the year that Freddy Adam (Bullock #76) won over Kenny Shoemaker (Wright-Zauntner #24) and Bill Wimble (Dave McCredy #33). Thanks for the great Website. It keeps the memories alive.

Best Regards -

10/01/07 Russ Thank you for the correction on the year of the photo. It is still showing the old "Drain Oil" surface in the pictures and not the pavement. It's great that these photos are still being appreciated and that corrections can be made to keep history accurate. Isn't unreal how it seams like yesterday, over 40 years later! Thanks, Russ
