Comments: Comment from Bruce:  I had an older lady give me some photos recently, she told me her mother or father took these but was unsure were they were taken. Let's see if the visitors of the Vault can reconize the track or any of the cars?

08/25/07 Russ This photo was taken at Langhorne Speedway.
08/25/07 3-Wide I thought it was Langhorne Russ, but there was a question there was info submitted with the photo that indicated that it might be Trenton...  We figured there wasn't that much stuff going on in the infield at Trenton so Langhorne was our next guess.

I always was in the infield at Langhorne on top of my dad's pickup truck along the inside of what I guess was turn one (although the place seemed like a circle to me.)  He built a scaffold for the bed of the truck so that we could be up a little higher.   Pretty cool stuff when you're 7 years old...

Do you think this was taken as the cars came up on the grandstands, before the pit area?   I can't quite figure it out.
08/25/07 Russ Dodge Joe, you have it figured out pretty well.

The part of the first entrance/exit from the infield pit can be seen, the tunnel under the track to the infield would be at the left end of the picture. The cars would pit in the infield however, during a race, the cars in competition would pit along a stone wall on the home stretch in front of the grandstand. Usually the cars would back up to that wall prior to the race for pre-race preparation.

This photo gives you a good shot of the steel guard rail. This guard rail was salvaged by Leon Manchester and move to South Jersey when Bridgeport Speedway was built in 1972. Since Langhorne was a mile in length and Bridgeport a half mile theoretically, Leon doubled the guard rail up, making it higher for better driver safety. I believe, based on memory, all the guard rails and the steel work for the grandstands were purchased for $68,000. but had to be removed. It was a great deal then and an unbelievable deal at today's prices!

Now lets see how many cars and drivers can be identified in the picture!
08/26/07 Ed Duncan Hi Joe,The 38 is Jerry Cook an the 14 Joe Kelly in Dick Barneys car.Great picture.
08/26/07 Ned The only ones I can say are: Jerry Cook 38, Ron Narducci 98, Will Cagle 14 Coach.
08/26/07 Bill Hanna The # 38 is definitely CURRENT NASCAR OFFICIAL and former NASCAR Modified Champion Jerry Cook, and I believe that the # 98 is Ron Narducci.
08/27/07 Larry Jendras Jr. In 1968, the gold #98 was drvien by Maryland's Rick Schmelyum. He won the Langhorne Qualifier at Lincoln Speedway and picked the ride as a guaranteed starter. The white #14 coach was indeed Will Cagle. The pink coupe was the #72 usually driven by Jim Rudolph, but was driven by Joe Krukowski in this race.
11/15/08 Bonnie Collins I do believe this is Trenton, when I first looked at it I said, the track is
paved, and the Langhorne era for modifieds were dirt......
11/15/08 3Wide The modifieds ran on the dirt in the late 60's and early 70's.  I was there one year as a kid when Dutch Hoag won, and the track was paved.
