Comments: Comment: ...Yup, it's Will Cagle and yup... that's Stan Ploski's car and you just know they're has to be a story behind it... According to Will, the night before at Harmony, Stan Ploski Sr. got talking to Will about how this #27Jr was all set to start on the pole at Flemington on Saturday, but that his driver was going to be getting married... Knowing that the car would start on the pole regardless of who was driving it, Will offered to drive the car knowing that even though it was a Sportsman, by starting on the pole, he'd have a great shot of winning since it would take a while for the modifieds to make their way through the pack. Will told Stan Sr. that he'd drive the car under the following conditions: 50% of the winnings if he won, and 40% of whatever he got if he didn't win.

As you can see, it was a successful arrangement for all parties as Will lead every lap and ended up winning the feature... which meant that Will got $200, Stan Sr. got $200, and Stan Jr. got married!

12/21/02 Old Timer Will Cagle is driving Stan's car...I believe it was the night Stan got married and made it back Flemington to watch Will win.
12/21/02 Bill Hanna The man in the car is not Stan The Man, it is none other than "Wily" Will Cagle. This is at Flemington around 1964 I am estimating.
03/13/03 John Fahey This was not the only time that Stan the Man allowed someone else drive this car. In 1965 at the last race of the season at Flemington, Al Tasnady #39 needed a top finish in the feature to win the point championship. His car was disabled during the heat race, and he had no backup. Stan offered a ride in the 27jr and Tas finished high enough to end up in a tie for the championship with Hoop Schaible #95. John Fahey

I've asked this question of a few drivers if they've had a bad night in their car and had to park it, but picked up a ride in another car and went out and won or almost won. Jimmy Brenn, Jimmy Horton and Billy Pauch come to mind. Although Will's car wasn't broken, He hopped in a strange and under powered car and still won. This is stuff that legend and folk lure is made of. Love or hate him, the guy could drive.

02.15.21  Pete Madsen  I remember that. Hoop was unhappy about Tas being able to do that and tie him. I believe he quit going to Flemington because of that.
