Comments: One of my all time favorites.  I used to write #56 on my notebooks when I was a kid and have always liked cars with the #56 since it was the number that I remember Jim running most often (Jim Baker, Rich Hinkle, etc.)  Talk about courage, after having his hands badly burned in a racing accident, Jim told the doctors to just make them so that he could grip a steering wheel once again.  Jim raced for many years after this picture was taken and even turned some heads when he tried well into the late 70's to qualify a FRONT engined Indy car for the Indy 500.  Jim later retired and I was sad to hear of his passing about 10 years ago.  Jim's driving style and courage earned him the well suited nickname of "Herk".

09/22/05 Dwight Clock This, I am sure, was taken in 1969. I know that Hurtubise competed in the National Open that year.
02.07.09 Wileyotter I worked a few races over the years with Jim including a USAC race at Langhorn when he drove the #56 Plymouth for Norm Nelson and one of the last races he ran with the "Miller Mallard".. The front engine Offy.

It wasn't only his hands that we burned.. It was almost his whole body from a crash at Milwaukee with an Indy car.. Another thing he had to do to race the long races back in the late 60s was to hook a heavy carburetor spring to the side of his helmet and then to the roll cage so he could keep his head up in the corners because
of muscle damage to his neck from the burns.. I have a picture of the Plymouth at Langhorne somewhere.. If I can find it I'll send it in for posting..
