Comments: I hope you guys can help us out here with your memories of Jackie Evans.  I think we lost Jackie right about the time I started attending Flemington around 1969 or 70.

07/07/03 BILL GREAT RACER FROM MIAMI , CAME NORTH IN THE MID SIXTYS, RAN READING AND ORANGE COUNTY MOST OF THE TIME ,WAS KILLED AT READING FAIRGROUNDS , A GREAT LOSS, HE WAS A REAL GENTLEMAN
08/07/03 JOE BOKROS JACKIE WAS KILLED IN 1970 AT READING.  I HEARD HIS SEAT BELT BROKE.   I WAS IN VIETNAM AT THE TIME BUT I STILL WAS GETTING THE AARN.
12/04/03 BOBBY FIORELLO I WAS THERE....   MY FRIENDS AND I FROM TRENTON NJ WOULD RUN UP TO READING EVERY CHANCE WE HAD.  ON THIS NIGHT WE WERE SITTING ON THE FRONT STRETCH ON THE LOWER LEVEL WHEN JACKIE STARTED FLIPPING  (AND WE KNEW IT WAS BAD).   A GREAT LOSS TO THE RACING SCENE, HE WAS A TRUE GENTLEMAN TO THE SPORT,
12/12/03 FCobraJet428 This was before my time but it looks like a BIG BLOCK 427 FORD - does any on know?   If so i would like to see the #707, #76 and the #77 on the same track at the same time.
12/17/03 Tony A Yep, that sure is a 427 FORD HI RISER ENGINE . Just look at the valve covers and exhaust ports. Can't get enough of the FE's... .
01/10/04 Kevin Varanyak I was there also it was a wicked flip started coming out of the fouth turn and ended up stoping rite before the starters stand i remember that the seat broke.  The car came to rest on it's side.  Sad nite.   I think that race nite was a 50 or 100 lapper because those were the only races we went to at Reading.
02/10/05 Phil Fredericks It's been a long time since I'd seen this car. I was thinking I had imagined it! I saw it the first night at Middletown. After warm-ups Buzzy came out in a new 00, and did a few hot laps, alone, sliding the corners. Fast. When he went in, Jackie came out in this brown #77 and got permission to do the same. As I recall, he kept that car sideways for about three or four laps, straights and all! Hot! My friends and I were greatly saddened with his passing.
Thanks for a great sight, Phil Fredericks
02/24/05 John Stover Jackie was fatally injured at Reading during the consolation on Friday, August 28, 1970.  Feature event that evening was won by fellow Floridian Buzzie Reutimann in a 35 lap event.
05/30/05 Nothstein Was this the car he was killed in?  In the 70's picture section he's shown in a number 3 diring the fair in 1970.  The fair was in earlyAugust I believe?
06/04/05 John Stover Jackie was killed while driving the Lux #77. The car was based in Lebanon, PA.
07/13/05 Big Dog Mac Daddy13 A young driver at Five Mile Point Speedway resurrected this car and actually won a modified feature at 5MP holding off "Pont" track champion Larry Catlin.
11/25/05 Dave Freeman Was this the car Tim Ford ran at the Point in the early 70's?
12/18/05 Bobby Walz I think he won 13 features at Middletown in 69. The guy standing behind the engine hood has to be Bill Gettle,Lux's partner. Bill's engines are the best.  I know because I've owned a few.
02/13/06 Tom The guy standing behind the engine hood is not Bill Gettle, however you are correct that Johnny Lux's engine man was Billy Gettle. I know, he's my uncle. Billy's wife (my aunt) Ruth would pick me up, just about every Friday and Sunday to go to the Reading Fairgrounds. I'm glad this was a night we missed!

Jackie was a hard charger and one of the nicest individuals you ever want to meet. Indeed it was a sad, sad day. NOBODY resurrected the Maroon # 77 race car! Bill and John dug a large hole and buried that car in a place where they only knew about.

Johnny Lux is no longer with us to back that up but I'm sure Bill could set you straight.   Billy never participated on a racing team after that happened. However as many of you may know, he still is and has been doing racing engines in his machine shop here in Lebanon PA. I 'm not positive but the post above from 07/07/03 was probably by him.
12/22/06 Bobby Walz I just stopped at Bill Gettle's shop to see him about a flathead engine he's building for me.  We seem to get to talk about race cars, engines and drivers. Jackie Evans always comes up.  One of the events Bill told me about was about a 200 lap race at Lebanon Valley, NY.  Buzzie qualified 3 cars, winning the 3 heats. One in his car, one in Will Cagle's car and one in Jackie's car. Jackie Evans and Cagle came to the track in time
for the feature. Guess who won? It was Jackie Evans. I wish I was there for that one, it must have been something.
07.03.11 Michael Cawley I was about 6-7 years old when my Dad introduced me to Jackie Evans. We lived in the Kutztown Garden Apartments (1967) and Jackie did some kind of work there. We would go to the races regularly in Reading. He had a black Ford "I Beam" pick up truck that was rather tricked out for its day. He was a good friend to my Dad who knew no one in Kutztown. He was transferred there for a temporary assignment. We lived there only a year because my Dad was transferred again.

We moved from Kutztown to the Wilmington, DE area and I would hear from time to time from my Dad about Jackie.

When we were visiting friends of our family in Wyomissing, PA., in September 1970, my dad learned that Jackie had been killed a few weeks earlier. I still remember him taking me out on the porch to tell me about Jackie's accident. I remember feeling so sad because he was sort of a hero to me during those years. He was someone that I looked up to and he was, as the other posts say, one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. I hope there is an afterlife and that his spirit is in a good place.
05.20.12 Noelle Mays I have had the pleasure to be married into this fabulous family. My husband is Jackie's nephew. Jackie's brother Joe and his Daughter Linda are two of the most important people in our lives. On our recent visit to Florida Linda has the sweetest tribute to her dad, his battered helmet with wonderful pictures. They would be tickled if we had new pics. Would you happen to have any? I would even like to be able to copy the pic on this page! It is awesome!

Thanks,
Noelle Mays

I am Jackie's nephew, and grew up around him when I was a boy in Miami in the 50s and 60s. He was very, very kind --and I don't think I will ever fully get over his loss. I saw him race many times, but thankfully was not present the night of his accident.

My uncle Jackie was my favorite uncle. Great memories of handing him wrenches, hanging out with him and my cousin Linda and also spending Christmas Time with family. It's hard to believe it's been 50 years since we lost him. God bless you uncle Jackie!! Love always, Danny
