03/06/03 Jim B This is Paul Deasey's Big Donkey #707 - - it looks like Bobby Pickell next to the car.  This is the Ford cammer version of the car that Kenny Shoemaker drove at Langhorne in 1968.  The first issue of "Strapped In" has a photo of this car along side the Pleasant Hill Golf (Bob Wertz) #57 on the back cover.  I'll try to do some more poking around to see if I can find out more.
03/06/03 3-Wide Thanks Jim - I've got my copy of  Mike Feltenberg's "Strapped In" on order.  Here's how to get your copy of his magazine featuring the great days of Reading:

Send a check or money order for $5.00 plus $1.00 postage and handling to:

03/06/03 John Mc 3W, I think that's Middletown......looks like the drive-in area back there, if I'm not mistaken. Not sure of the driver, though. I believe that's Harry Steinkopf next to them w/ the 23. It's gotta be the '60's, probably '67 or '68. Thx, JMc
03/06/03 Jim Brewer I have attached the best reference I could find for this car with Bob Pickell driving it. It is from a 1968 AARN Pictorial. I have included the caption and photo credit as presented in the magazine. I have never been to Middletown but from the pics I have seen of the place I agree with John. The attached pic is from Reading and I think that is Jackie Hamilton in the background.  (see note below)
03/07/03 3-Wide The picture provided by Jim shows Bob Pickell wheeling the same #707 and it looks like he is wearing the same flannel shirt.  I try not to post pictures scanned from magazines, but I appreciate the leg work that Jim did for us to get to the bottom of who was riding the Donkey!
03/10/03 John Fahey Good job John Mc for correctly identifying #23, Harry Steinkopf in the background of Bobby Pickell #707. Harry owned an auto body business and lived in High Bridge NJ. He and his dad, Harry Sr., built all of their cars in the 60's & 70's from scratch. He ran regularly at Nazareth and Middletown , and sometimes Flemington and Harmony. He never won a feature but was a regular weekly competitor. The color of his cars was named Corona Creme, a color he accidently mixed in his body shop and used from there after. He once built the largest and heaviest coupe I had ever seen using heavy guage steel for the cage and bumpers. This car was run by Les Farley in the late 60's at Flemington after it was painted pink.
03/11/03 Dick Havens Jr. Hi 3W,  I really believe that this picture was taking at the small track at Nazareth, looking back at the big tracks grandstands.  The pits at the small track went up hill, from the grandstands, outside the 4th turn and the cars would go down a little hill, to enter the track!!  So the grandstands would be on the left of this picture.. The cars in the back ground, is where the fans parked and right behind the cars are the houses that are on the road that you come off of, which I can't remember the Rt. #, ( maybe 22) ???? I can't remember any other track, where the pits were uphill. Reading the pits were on the infield and so was Middletown and they were lower then the track, so you would see the track in this picture.. Well, this is only my guess..You got to remember, I'm getting older also...LOL             ( P.S.  I believe that Nazareth moved the pits to the infield, years after this picture was taking...)     Dick Havens Jr.
03/12/03 3-Wide Opps guys.... I just found the original email from Bryan, (who provided this picture), and here is some additional info:

'Here is a picture of the 707 in the mid to late 60`s.  Its sitting in the pits at Nazereth with Bobby Pickel standing next to it.  It`s a 37 chevy coupe, and the same car that Gerald Chamberlain drove in the late 60`s.  The picture was a bought picture from  photography   Fred Smith, R.D. #1 Trim Street, Kirkwood NY.  13795 (Bryan Coffey)

08/05/06 Chuck Hassler Yes this is the same car that Chamberlain drove with major modifications done to it such as the engine set back. This was done in the same year Pickell drove it. This is also the same car Bill Wimbel drove for Deasey the year before.
09/16/06 Rich Reinhart This is the old Nazareth half mile for sure. Until the early 70`s the pits were located outside the track behind turn 4 and the start of the front chute. We always sat in the 4th turn in the high grandstands. Before the race, we kids would go to the top of the stands and call out to the drivers as the came up to the concession stand that was located under the stands for something to eat and drink. If you remember there was a figure eight track in the infield at the time. Then the pits were put in the infield, the figure eight stopped, and the new lights were put up and the races taped for TV on Twin County cable each week. And we parked our car in the old pit area..
