08/28/04 Jerry When I started getting into this great sport I started lookin back to the guys who made it what it is today/heard from a few guys this guy was on the verge of a grand natl (before winston cup) career.
12/30/06 Rick Bell Another "back in the day" story...but, then, it was 40 years ago.

In the summer of 1968, Capital City Speedway, outside of Ottawa, Ontario, in Canada, held a race for modifieds that included Jerry Cook, Bugs Stevens, Dutch Hoag, Don Mactavish, and drivers I can't recall who were part of the Genesee All-Star Circuit (there may be another connection, but I can't recall).

I was only 16, working at the speedway on racedays as a part-time job.

My memory doesn't serve me as to how Don finished in that race, only that early in the evening I needed to borrow an adjustable wrench to make some kind of repair to something to the fencing that separated the spectator area from the pits. Don was the only guy who even took the time to speak to me, and lent me the wrench without question. A nice guy, who impressed me since he took the time to talk to some kid he had never met.

Later that evening, I remembered that I still had Don's wrench, and caught up with him as his truck was leaving. I reached into my back pocket to hand him back his wrench, only to find it had dropped out, and was lying on the ground about 50 feet or so behind me. Don said something like: "Hang onto it, I'll get it back when I come back next summer".

Of course, Don died at Daytona the following February at Daytona.

I still have that wrench...still use it from time to time...still keep it clean.

Nothing to do directly with racing, per se, but it's funny what you remember 40 years after the fact.

The L & R Speed Shop Spl. was owned by my parents Len & Margaret Bosley. I remember we got there late, missed practice, time trailed, set fast time & led every lap. Don was a very special talent and missed by many. Track was about a third mile asphalt at the time if I remember right.

I remember working on Glen Legere's, and Don Berrio’s car M3 in 1968  at Thompson, and Mac's car was painted a pale yellow  like the photo. However it had a sprayed on black vinyl roof added then. I think that the car had flipped, and it was easier to add the spray on vinyl roof, than smooth out the dents on the car. Thompson ran in the afternoon at the start of the season, and immediately after the feature Mac, and crew were off to Utica-Rome for an evening show. Lou Lazzaro’s 4 was another car that would do the Thompson to Utica commute. A few months later Mac was running a late model Camaro with Ray Stonkus wrenching, and they were racing all over the Eastern half of the country.
